Online Safety

Social media is a wonderful, amazing tool where would we be without it? From pictures to messaging it’s become part of our everyday routine. However social media does come with risk and it’s important we are doing everything we can do to keep ourselves safe. Social Media can also affect the way we feel about selves in a negative way, it can often leave us feeling down or deflated if no one has liked our photos or someone else has got more followers or more likes. So from online wellbeing to online safety always remember SELFIE.

Secure – Make sure your social media accounts have high privacy settings. Don’t invite people into your online world that you don’t know, also don’t give out your location online it’s very easy for someone online to tack you down. If you are using Snapchat maps make sure it’s on ghost mode and always double check your privacy settings. We regularly down load apps and most popular apps are free. However free apps including social media apps make money by selling on our information. 75% of free mobile apps are selling on phone numbers, videos and pictures. Flooding social media with lots of personal information can be dangerous.

Evaluate – not everything that appears online is trustworthy, might sound obvious but challenge what you see. Don’t believe everything you see on Youtube or social media, things can be very easily edited from photos to news stories. When researching something see if the website or article matches up against other sources.

Likes – What was the last thing you posted online and what was the reason behind it? Just because someone gets lots of likes does not mean they are popular, have bags full confidence or have high self-esteem. If we are posting things just for likes, is this good for our wellbeing?

Fun – Social media is brilliant make sure your using safely and positively and have fun online

Inform – If you are worried or concerned about anything you see online make sure you inform or tell someone

Edit – As mentioned above, things can be very easily edited online especially photos. Do people only put the best parts of their lives online? If so why? We then often get pulled into comparing our lives to theirs. Challenge what you see online and regularly.
